Tra il 1984 e il 1989, l'artista Alberto Burri ricoprì l'intero paese con una colata di cemento bianco seguendo esattamente la forma delle strade e delle case — creando quella che è considerata la più grande opera d'arte contemporanea all'aperto del mondo: 80.000 mq di cemento bianco che percorri camminando, come fantasma tra le strade di un paese che non esiste più. Un'esperienza che lascia senza parole — poetica e straziante allo stesso tempo. Accesso libero tutto l'anno.

In 1968 a devastating earthquake completely destroyed Gibellina and 14 other towns in the Belìce Valley. Old Gibellina lay in ruins for years. Between 1984 and 1989, artist Alberto Burri covered the entire town with white concrete following exactly the shape of streets and houses — creating what is considered the world's largest open-air contemporary artwork: 80,000 sq metres of white concrete you walk through like a ghost between the streets of a town that no longer exists. An experience that leaves you speechless — poetic and heartbreaking at the same time. Free access all year.

I 108 posti a sedere sono disposti esattamente come le stelle della costellazione di Andromeda. La cavea si affaccia su un panorama infinito di colline siciliane — il palcoscenico è la campagna stessa. Lorenzo Reina è morto il 27 dicembre 2025 a soli 65 anni, trovato dal figlio Libero nella sua casa di campagna a pochi metri dal teatro. Nel 2018 era stato invitato alla Biennale di Architettura di Venezia. «Una notte chiesi al cielo di non farmi mai sazio della mia arte — e fui ascoltato.»

An extraordinary and moving place, made even more special by the recent passing of its creator. Lorenzo Reina was a shepherd-sculptor from the Sicani Mountains who, after promising his dying father to return to shepherding, built this open-air theatre stone by stone — over decades of transhumance — at Santo Stefano di Quisquina. The 108 seats are arranged exactly like the stars of the Andromeda constellation. The seating area overlooks an endless panorama of Sicilian hills — the stage is the countryside itself. Lorenzo Reina died on 27 December 2025 at just 65 years old, found by his son Libero at his farmhouse just metres from the theatre. In 2018 he was invited to the Venice Architecture Biennale. "One night I asked the sky never to let me be satisfied with my art — and I was heard."

Lorenzo Reina starb am 27. Dezember 2025 mit nur 65 Jahren, von seinem Sohn Libero im Bauernhaus wenige Meter vom Theater entfernt aufgefunden. 2018 wurde er zur Architekturbiennale Venedig eingeladen. „Eines Nachts bat ich den Himmel, mich nie satt werden zu lassen von meiner Kunst — und wurde erhört."

Burgio è un piccolo borgo medievale che conserva una delle ultime fonderie di campane tradizionali d'Italia — e probabilmente d'Europa. La Fonderia Virgadaula fonde campane con tecniche antiche rimaste invariate da secoli: si usano ancora stampi in argilla, bronzo fuso e metodi trasmessi di generazione in generazione. Le campane di Burgio suonano in chiese e cattedrali di tutto il mondo. È possibile visitare la fonderia e assistere alla lavorazione (su prenotazione). Il borgo stesso merita una passeggiata: strade di pietra, palazzi nobiliari e una vista spettacolare sulla Valle del Verdura.

Burgio is a small medieval village that preserves one of the last traditional bell foundries in Italy — and probably in Europe. The Virgadaula foundry casts bells using ancient techniques unchanged for centuries: clay moulds, molten bronze and methods passed down from generation to generation. Burgio's bells ring in churches and cathedrals around the world. You can visit the foundry and watch the work (by appointment). The village itself is worth a stroll: stone streets, noble palaces and a spectacular view over the Verdura Valley.

Burgio ist ein kleines mittelalterliches Dorf, das eine der letzten traditionellen Glockengießereien Italiens — und wahrscheinlich Europas — bewahrt. Die Gießerei Virgadaula gießt Glocken mit jahrhundertealten, unveränderten Techniken: Tonformen, geschmolzene Bronze und von Generation zu Generation weitergegebene Methoden. Burgios Glocken läuten in Kirchen und Kathedralen auf der ganzen Welt. Ein Besuch der Gießerei mit Besichtigung der Arbeit ist möglich (nach Vereinbarung). Das Dorf selbst ist einen Spaziergang wert: Steinstraßen, Adelspaläste und ein spektakulärer Blick über das Verdura-Tal.

Burgio est un petit village médiéval qui conserve l'une des dernières fonderies de cloches traditionnelles d'Italie — et probablement d'Europe. La fonderie Virgadaula coule des cloches avec des techniques ancestrales inchangées depuis des siècles : moules en argile, bronze fondu et méthodes transmises de génération en génération. Les cloches de Burgio sonnent dans des églises et cathédrales du monde entier. Il est possible de visiter la fonderie et d'assister au travail (sur réservation). Le village lui-même mérite une promenade : rues pavées, palais nobles et une vue spectaculaire sur la Vallée du Verdura.
